Under-stairs storage in Hurlingham: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Hurlingham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and the years since 2000 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and under-stairs cupboards can be designed to work around them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Hurlingham, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Imperial Wharf station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses like Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live near Parsons Green (park), living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

About our under-stairs storage in Hurlingham

The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. We design under-stairs storage around the things you actually want to keep there, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. For a home in Hurlingham, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. If your home has stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and the low end of the space going to waste, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Hurlingham built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access tricky for readings and safety checks. A design made for the space keeps them in clear reach from the start. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you.

Advice

What affects the price in Hurlingham

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.

Before the design visit

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Hurlingham

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hurlingham?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My home in Hurlingham is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, usually behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
