North Kensington Under-Stairs Storage

Under-stairs storage for your home in North Kensington: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made at our workshop and fitted by us.

  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter

About our under-stairs storage in North Kensington

Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in North Kensington, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cleaning things with no proper home and storage that doesn’t match the hallway.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around North Kensington, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. We plan the mix at the design visit.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. The angled fronts are cut to match the stairs, keeping the lines neat.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions from North Kensington

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Kensington?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

I live in a flat in North Kensington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How do I get a quote?

Simply use our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Under-stairs storage for homes in North Kensington

About 53% of the homes in the area around North Kensington went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of North Kensington, Historic England’s list includes The Anglican Chapel (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west, and Kensal House Day Nursery (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 53% of homes in the neighbourhood around North Kensington were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In terraced houses of that age, the space under the stairs often holds the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board, and they must stay reachable.

If your children go to Barlby Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Living in a block of flats near Kensal Green station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Little Wormwood Scrubs? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, shaped to the angle of your stairs.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.
