How we make under-stairs storage for Bexleyheath

No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. That is something a standard unit cannot do, in Bexleyheath or anywhere else. Most enquiries start with a staircase with untidy space beneath it and the low end of the space going to waste; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Bexleyheath, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

Most people get in touch because the space has become a dumping ground. Under the stairs is easy to fill and hard to sort, with things pushed to the back and lost in the dark. Purpose-made drawers and shelves give everything its own place, so you can find what you need without emptying the cupboard.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

If you live near Danson Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What to check before you book

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

Questions from Bexleyheath

Do you cover homes near Bexleyheath station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bexleyheath?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How is under-stairs storage priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. We set it all out in a written quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, usually behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Think about what you will keep in each drawer
  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

When we have finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Closing drawers fully helps keep the runners and fronts in good order. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.

Bexleyheath homes and under-stairs storage

About 51% of the homes in the streets around Bexleyheath went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bexleyheath. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Bexley sets its own rules. If your road in Bexleyheath falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live in a period home close to Trinity Baptist Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. Red House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
