Under-stairs storage in South Kenton

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. In South Kenton or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cleaning things with no proper home and needing a compact spot for a laptop.

Walls in houses from between the wars are normally straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around South Kenton is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions from South Kenton

I live near South Kenton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Kenton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it’s best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. Should you have a question about the storage, tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll help.

Do not store things in front of the meter or fuse board. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You let us know about the space under the stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
  3. We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Under-stairs storage in South Kenton: local notes

About 67% of the homes in the area around South Kenton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 13% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Kenton include Windermere Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Brent is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in South Kenton. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near South Kenton station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Byron Court Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Close to Preston Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf storage is not designed around a meter or a fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access awkward for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

  • Pull-out drawers

What affects the price in South Kenton

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
