About our fitted home offices in South Kenton
Everything in a home office starts with the desk. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with storage below where it helps. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. We’ll go through the details during the design visit in South Kenton. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are glare from a window on the screen and shelving that bows under the load.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around South Kenton, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
How fitting day works
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, and talk through the design.
- We send a written quote.
- The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Practical tips
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Check whether you’ll need new sockets
- List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
- Think about glare on your screen
- Note how many files and books you need to store
When we’ve finished fitting, the desk and storage are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. A desk mat helps protect the new paint while it settles.
Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Mop up spills quickly. A mat protects the area you use most.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf desks and shelving are made for flat walls and standard sizes. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Your questions about fitted home offices in South Kenton
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Kenton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Is South Kenton in the area you cover for fitted home offices?
Yes, South Kenton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Brent and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Can you fit sockets in the desk?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.
What does a built-in desk cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

How it’s made
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It goes into the desk, the shelves and the drawers. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Doors and drawer fronts
Cupboard doors hide the clutter of working life. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. At the end of the day, work can be closed away.
