St Helier Under-Stairs Storage

We make under-stairs storage in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood for homes in St Helier. The finish is spray painted or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you.

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

How we price under-stairs storage

The price for your room depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How square the room is

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Under-stairs storage in St Helier: what you get

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so you gain storage without losing access. If you are not sure what’s under your stairs in St Helier, we will look when we visit. If your home has coats and shoes piling up in the hall and a low corner too deep to reach into, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around St Helier, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Under-stairs cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Under-stairs storage in St Helier: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St Helier were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 69%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of St Helier is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in St Helier joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live in a flat close to Sutton Common station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Near listed buildings like Mecca Bingo Club, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of St Helier, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

St Helier is in the London Borough of Sutton, about 1 mile south of Sutton. Anywhere in St Helier, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. St Helier is one of 17 places on our list for Sutton.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
  • Let us know about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can

Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it is best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything is not right, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in St Helier?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in St Helier?

Yes, we work across Sutton, St Helier included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, normally behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in St Helier

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • Cleaning things with no proper home
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How parking will work on your street
