Fitted wardrobes in St Helier, Sutton
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in St Helier starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Fitted wardrobes in St Helier
Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. There’s no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in St Helier, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and empty alcoves in the bedroom.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around St Helier is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What we do not do
Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.
- It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Preparing the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Ask for a quote
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Do you need fitted wardrobes in St Helier?
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
If your children go to Tweeddale Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
Bedroom storage in St Helier
In the streets around St Helier, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 69%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of St Helier, Historic England’s list includes Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Hill House (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 69% of homes in the streets around St Helier date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
Close to Morden Hall Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a flat near Sutton Common station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Questions we are often asked
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in St Helier?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and St Helier is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Helier?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through during the design visit.
