Under-stairs storage in Cheam
About our under-stairs storage in Cheam
Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. Most enquiries start with a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a sloping corner nobody can reach, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Cheam, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, but the space under a staircase rarely offers either. A ready-made unit tends to leave gaps at the slope and wasted space at the back. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It costs more than something off the shelf, and what you gain is the space a standard unit can’t reach. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Cheam
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Cheam were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cheam include St Andrew's United Reformed Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St John (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 63% of households in the streets around Cheam live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
If your children go to Glaisdale School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If you live near Howell Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 1 mile north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.
Cheam is about 1 mile north-east of Sutton, within the London Borough of Sutton. Whether your home in Cheam is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Cheam is one of 17 places on our list for Sutton.

How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store, such as coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know about parking near your home

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Cheam?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Cheam station?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?
Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

What else we make in Cheam
Before and after fitting day
These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
When we’ve finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits flat, panelled and angled fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.
Doors and drawer fronts
The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to suit the room. Each one follows the line of the stairs above.
