Where other trades come in

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

How we make TV and media units for St Helier

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Sutton and the rest of London, after a design visit and a quote in writing. People usually come to us about bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around St Helier, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where TV and media units work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

TV and media units in St Helier: local notes

About 69% of the homes in the streets around St Helier went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 10% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of St Helier, Historic England’s list includes Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Hill House (Grade II), under half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in St Helier. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.6 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Sutton Common station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Morden Hall Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Questions from St Helier

Do you cover homes near Sutton Common station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near St Helier affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That is the aim, and it is planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
