Need under-stairs storage in St Paul's Cray?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
About our under-stairs storage in St Paul's Cray
Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. Wherever your home is in St Paul's Cray, the process is the same. People usually come to us about a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. Around St Paul's Cray, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Questions we’re often asked
Is St Paul's Cray in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and St Paul's Cray is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Paul's Cray?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Can you match the storage to my hallway?
Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it sits quietly in the hall.
Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
What we don’t do
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Pull-out drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
Fitting day, step by step
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Advice
Pricing under-stairs storage in St Paul's Cray
Several things affect the price:
- The width and height of the space
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How square the room is
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.
Making use of tricky spaces in St Paul's Cray
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St Paul's Cray were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 54%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of St Paul's Cray, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. Depending on your street in St Paul's Cray, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like at the measuring visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Barnabas, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. For families living near Leesons Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Looking after your furniture
People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. It is worth keeping a note of the colour so any touch-ups match. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.
