Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
TV and media units in St Paul's Cray: what you get
TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Bromley and the rest of London. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are nowhere good for speakers and boxes and consoles on the floor.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around St Paul's Cray, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Why bespoke in St Paul's Cray?
Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

FAQs: TV and media units in St Paul's Cray
I live near St Mary Cray station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make TV and media units for homes in St Paul's Cray?
Yes, St Paul's Cray is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
Your electrician does that. It’s best done before the unit goes in, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
What happens on fitting day
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- How big the furniture is
- How square the room is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.
