Storage in St Paul's Cray homes: local notes

About 54% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St Paul's Cray went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of St Paul's Cray include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Church of St Paulinus (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 51% of households in the streets around St Paul's Cray, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If your children go to Leesons Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Chislehurst Common, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. Living in a block of flats near St Mary Cray station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How we make loft storage for St Paul's Cray

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in St Paul's Cray, we’ll look at what fits. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low eaves that nobody can use and needing storage in a loft office.

Around St Paul's Cray, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions from St Paul's Cray

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St Paul's Cray?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near St Mary Cray station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the angle of the ceiling, with hanging where there’s height. It makes the most of the space. We plan it at the measuring visit.

How is loft storage priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically simple, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Eaves cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts with some details from you.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and sprayed there if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth does the same job at the floor.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits carcasses, drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.
