St Paul's Cray Fitted Cupboards

Thinking about fitted cupboards in St Paul's Cray? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

About our fitted cupboards in St Paul's Cray

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If your home has cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around St Paul's Cray, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It helps to let us know about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St Paul's Cray?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in St Paul's Cray?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and St Paul's Cray is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that is for your supplier or an electrician.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

St Paul's Cray homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 54% of the housing in the streets around St Paul's Cray, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of St Paul's Cray, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Church of St Paulinus (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in St Paul's Cray is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Barnabas, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If you live in a flat close to St Mary Cray station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Chislehurst Common? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Several things affect the price:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

To get a quote, use our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Any plumbing in a utility room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can typically be set right at the hinge.

Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
