Under-stairs storage in Stonebridge, Brent
Under-stairs storage in Stonebridge: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
- Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
Under-stairs storage for your home in Stonebridge
Is it time for under-stairs storage?
The low end of the space is usually the problem. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
- Cleaning things with no proper home
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
- Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
The wider area includes historic houses such as Pitzhanger Manor, about 2.8 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.
Before you choose who makes it

- Will the quote be in writing?
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
About our under-stairs storage in Stonebridge
In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If you are living with needing a compact spot for a laptop and cleaning things with no proper home, that’s what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A large number of homes around Stonebridge date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
The floor under a staircase is rarely perfectly level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors and drawers run true.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It’s done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. You choose the colour.
From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure the space and discuss the design with you.
- You receive a written quote for the storage we have discussed.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer. Any meters stay easy to reach.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Stonebridge affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harlesden station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?
Many designs use both. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We will suggest a layout when we visit.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
Honest limits
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What else we make in Stonebridge
Stonebridge homes and under-stairs storage
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Stonebridge were built since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Stonebridge is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Purpose-built flats are more common around Stonebridge than across Brent: about 53% of households, against about 38%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
For a family home near The Stonebridge School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Close to St. Raphael's Edible Garden? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
