Stonebridge Window Seats
Window seats in Stonebridge: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. We visit to measure and discuss the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

- Looking for a reading spot by the window
Window seats designed for your room
About our window seats in Stonebridge
Sash windows are a feature of many older London homes. A seat beneath one needs to sit below the cill so the window still opens and closes easily. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the measuring visit in Stonebridge. If you are living with unused space below a sash window and no space for toys and games, that’s what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large share of the homes around Stonebridge date from 2000 onwards, and newer houses that have had the loft converted often have sloping ceilings and eaves to use. For lofts, the storage goes into spaces that are already converted or boarded. Wherever they go, window seats are fixed to suit the wall.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Consider adding shelving around the seat
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
- Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the seat clean. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge picks up marks first.
Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, message us from the contact page and describe what’s happening.

Your questions about window seats in Stonebridge
I live near Harlesden station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Does a conservation area in or near Stonebridge affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

When you need someone else
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the seat
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Lift-up lids
Lift-up lids are a simple way to add storage under a seat. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it suits things you reach for now and then.
Doors and drawer fronts
A radiator grille sits in the front of the seat, letting the heat reach the room. It is painted to match the other fronts. The rest of the front can be drawers, doors or plain panels.
Fitted storage in Stonebridge
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Stonebridge, with about 28% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Stonebridge is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 53% of households in the area around Stonebridge, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live near St. Raphael's Edible Garden, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near The Stonebridge School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

The problems window seats solve
Most people simply want to use the window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It gives you a place to sit in the light.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use
- Looking for a reading spot by the window
- Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
For an older house near Saint Michael and All Angels, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether they measure the room themselves
