To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The overall size of the piece

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Bespoke kitchens in Strand-on-the-Green

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are a central island in a larger kitchen and open shelves with cupboards below; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Strand-on-the-Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the kitchen is often in the narrow rear part of the house, or in a side return that has since been extended. Cabinets are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door looks crisp and even, and the moisture-resistant grade suits a kitchen.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Strand-on-the-Green

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Strand-on-the-Green, with about 15% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Strand-on-the-Green, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Strand-on-the-Green joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Kew Palace, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Close to Kew Green? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you tell us about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Strand-on-the-Green?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What are your kitchens made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Every kitchen is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
