How we make TV and media units for Strand-on-the-Green
Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them. If you are living with speakers muffled behind doors and cables trailing across the wall, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Strand-on-the-Green went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the measuring visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
- A written quote follows for the unit.
- The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.
Preparing the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

What we don’t do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Structural changes to the wall
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Plastering or decorating around the unit
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it is made from
- Cable routes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Ventilated cabinets
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Note the size of each box and speaker
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- Check where the seating will go
- Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
Clean the paintwork with a soft cloth that is barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.
Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Each one needs space around it.
Common questions about TV and media units
Do you cover homes near Chiswick station?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
I live in a flat in Strand-on-the-Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Strand-on-the-Green?
Just message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Strand-on-the-Green homes and TV and media units
About 48% of the homes in the area around Strand-on-the-Green went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Strand-on-the-Green, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 48% of homes in the area around Strand-on-the-Green were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older houses usually have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit a TV in the middle and media storage either side, with cable routes and ventilation planned in.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Zoffany House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Chiswick station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
