Under-stairs storage in Summerstown, Wandsworth

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Summerstown starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

Under-stairs storage in Summerstown

Under-stairs storage in Summerstown: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Summerstown were built before 1919 (about 53%) and since 2000 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Summerstown, Historic England’s list includes Leather Bottle Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north, and Church of St Mary (Summerstown) (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Wandsworth is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Summerstown is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

For an older house near St Mary's Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. Southside House, about 2.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Summerstown is about 2 miles north of Clapham Junction, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Wherever you are in Summerstown, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Wandsworth, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

We work across SW17, SW18 and SW19 for under-stairs storage. You will find streets here such as Weir Road, Acuba Road and Mount Road, and we cover homes on all of them for under-stairs storage. Summerstown is near the A218, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Other places close to Summerstown include Earlsfield (1 mile north), Southfields (1 mile north), Tooting Bec (1 mile south-east), Tooting (1 mile south-east) and South Wimbledon (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Wandsworth, our area takes in Clapham Junction (2 miles north), Battersea (2 miles north), Putney (2 miles north-west), Balham (2 miles north-east), Furzedown (2 miles south-east) and Streatham Park (2 miles east).

Under-stairs storage for homes in Summerstown

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. Many designs for homes in Summerstown combine the two. If your home has a hallway crowded with coats and shoes and a dark, wasted space under the stairs, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Summerstown date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Structural changes to the staircase itself
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Summerstown?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work

If your children go to Burntwood School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
