Questions from Putney
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Putney station?
Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in Putney?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
How we make under-stairs storage for Putney
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. If you are not sure what’s under your stairs in Putney, we’ll look when we visit. People normally come to us about cleaning things with no proper home and a sloping corner nobody can reach; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Many homes around Putney date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. In a house of that age, the stairs often have a cupboard below that can be reworked, while in a flat, the hallway and any recess are the places to look. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it is useful to tell us during the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs.

Starting with a design visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers that pull out make the back of the space easy to use. You see everything at once, without reaching into the dark. They can hold shoes, the vacuum or cleaning things.

Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Tell us about anything bulky that needs to fit
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
When we’ve finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a drawer stops running smoothly, get in touch through our contact form and describe it.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.
Putney homes and under-stairs storage
In the area around Putney, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Putney include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of All Saints (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 28% of homes around Putney were built before 1919, well below the figure for Wandsworth as a whole, about 44%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.
For a flat near Putney station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Polish Church of St John the Evangelist, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If your children go to Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, message us from the contact page.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
- How you want to use the space
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
