Southfields Under-Stairs Storage
Planning under-stairs storage for a home in Southfields? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
Under-stairs storage for your home in Southfields
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Under-stairs storage for homes in Southfields
In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. People usually come to us about space under the stairs that’s hard to use and needing a compact spot for a laptop, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around Southfields, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What under-stairs storage cannot fix
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
- Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Tips worth knowing
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Think about what you will keep in each drawer
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. If there’s a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us what’s happening.
How fitting works for under-stairs storage
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch with a few details and, if you like, a sketch.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
Ask for a quote
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Storage in Southfields homes: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the streets around Southfields, with about 14% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Southfields, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Southfields joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live in a flat close to Earlsfield station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to King George's Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For families living near Floreat Wandsworth Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
Southfields is part of the London Borough of Wandsworth, about 2 miles north-east of Clapham Junction. From period terraces to newer flats in Southfields, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Southfields is one of 15 places on our list for Wandsworth.

Questions from Southfields
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Southfields?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
I live near Earlsfield station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter is not our work, so we design for where it is now.
Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?
The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.
