Under-stairs storage in Balham
Under-stairs storage for homes in Balham
Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit can’t do, in Balham or anywhere else. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage that doesn’t match the hallway and coats and shoes piling up in the hall, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Balham, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, made to follow walls that are seldom true.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Let us know about parking during the design visit
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. If there is a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, message us from the contact page and tell us what’s happening.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Under-stairs storage for homes in Balham
Homes built before 1919 make up about 64% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Balham, with about 9% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Balham, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Balham is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live in a flat close to Balham station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Ravenstone Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Balham
The most common reason is clutter. Things get pushed to the back, piled on top of each other and forgotten. Purpose-made drawers and shelves give everything its own place, and you no longer need to empty the cupboard to reach one thing.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
- Storage that does not match the hallway
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
The wider area includes historic houses like Carlyle's House, about 2.9 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
- The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Empty the space we will be working in
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Common questions about under-stairs storage
My home in Balham is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near Balham affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
