Under-stairs storage in Battersea: what you get
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. At the design visit in Battersea, we note what’s there and design around it. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a fuse board that’s hard to get to.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Battersea, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Battersea
Do you cover homes near Clapham Junction station?
Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Battersea?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What is under-stairs storage made from?
Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.

Storage in Battersea homes: local notes
About 48% of the homes in the streets around Battersea went up before 1919, and about 20% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Battersea, 12 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. That normally means a van in Battersea needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
For a flat near Clapham Junction station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For families living near Christ Church CofE Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

What affects the price in Battersea
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- How big the furniture is
- How square the room is
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Any ideas or images you have saved
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing.
- The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Practical tips
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d store, so stick to that and they’ll stay straight.
Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
- Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.
