Under-stairs storage in Clapham Junction, Wandsworth

Under-stairs storage for your home in Clapham Junction: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made at our workshop and fitted by us.

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall

Need under-stairs storage in Clapham Junction?

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Clapham Junction

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. We plan the storage around them, typically with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Clapham Junction, we note what’s there and design around it. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and space under the stairs that’s hard to use.

With a large share of homes around Clapham Junction built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, and the space under a staircase is neither. Boxed units usually leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Storage made for the space follows the angle of the stairs and uses its full depth. It’s a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.

What you get with us

  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

What it’s made from

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the back of the space easy to use. You see everything at once, without reaching into the dark. Shoe drawers, a drawer for the vacuum and drawers for cleaning things are all possible.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. It goes into the carcasses, the shelves and the drawer boxes, and its edge can be left visible or painted to match.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Clapham Junction

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Clapham Junction were built before 1919 (about 48%) and since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 21 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Clapham Junction. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 49% of households in the area around Clapham Junction live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is one of the older houses near Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For a flat near Clapham Junction station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Christ Church CofE Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

My home in Clapham Junction is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Clapham Junction?

Yes, Clapham Junction is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

How do I get started?

The first step is to get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
