Fitted wardrobes across SW18: what to expect

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where that suits the room. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in SW18, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Most enquiries start with storage boxes stacked under the bed and no space in front for doors to swing, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

What goes into your quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Fitted wardrobes across SW18: local notes

We make fitted wardrobes for homes across SW18, in Wimbledon, Clapham Junction and Battersea and beyond. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the SW18 postcode district, with about 18% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than a third of the homes in SW18 (about 50%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older bedrooms typically have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the SW18 postcode district, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Wandsworth: If your home is one of the older houses near St Anne's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Anne, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Building work to create a loft room

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in SW18

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Do you cover SW18?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, SW18 included.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that is often wasted and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
