Fitted storage in Earlsfield

In the neighbourhood around Earlsfield, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 65%) and the years since 2000 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Earlsfield, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Andrew (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Earlsfield House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Around Earlsfield, about 65% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Wandsworth as a whole, about 44%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Living in a block of flats near Earlsfield station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Fulham Palace, about 2.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. Close to King George's Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

About our under-stairs storage in Earlsfield

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, typically with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. At the design visit in Earlsfield, we note what’s there and design around it. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cleaning things with no proper home and a low corner too deep to reach into.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace usually has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Earlsfield were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. We send a written quote for the storage.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What affects the price in Earlsfield

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Earlsfield

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Earlsfield?

Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Earlsfield included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Earlsfield?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
