Questions we’re often asked
Is Thames View Estate in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes, Thames View Estate is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking Riverside station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Keep the vents clear once it is in use.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you plan for a future TV?
If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. Tell us the size you have in mind so the space and cable routes suit it.
How do I get started?
Just tell us about the room on our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we will arrange a design visit.
TV and media units for homes in Thames View Estate
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. If you’re living with a big screen that dominates the wall and somewhere to keep games tidy, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Thames View Estate, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
Why us?
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Designed for the room you have
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Work across the whole of London
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Living-room carpentry in Thames View Estate: local notes
About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Thames View Estate went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 31% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 32% of homes in the neighbourhood around Thames View Estate date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where TV and media units go.

Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
- A quote in writing follows for the unit.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

The problems TV and media units solve
Families with consoles, games and controllers want them tidied away. Cupboards and drawers in the unit keep them in one place.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
- Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Cables trailing across the wall
If you live near Mayesbrook Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
