Loft storage for your home in Thames View Estate

Loft storage in Thames View Estate: what you get

A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Thames View Estate, we will look at what fits. If your home has unused space in a dormer and a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good part of the housing around Thames View Estate is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What we do not do

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Any work on the structure of the house
  • Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and talk through the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Loft storage in Thames View Estate: local notes

In the streets around Thames View Estate, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and the years since 2000 (about 31%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Thames View Estate include Eastbury Manor House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Thames View Estate (about 28%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Where a post-war house has had its loft converted, the eaves and slopes can take fitted storage.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make loft storage for a home in Thames View Estate?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Thames View Estate is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Barking Riverside station?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

Not when it’s planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

Any door that gives access behind the knee wall can look like the others. It opens fully, so the space behind can still be reached. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall and the slope. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth does the same job at the floor.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything isn’t right with the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.
