Fitted Wardrobes in Wimbledon

In Wimbledon, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Wimbledon

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Wimbledon

After a loft conversion, the new bedroom normally needs storage that suits the slopes. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, keeping the room clear.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary, under half a mile north of the centre of Wimbledon, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Fitted wardrobes in Wimbledon: what you get

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. If you’re living with a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Homes in an area like Wimbledon can come from many different periods, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check at the design visit and choose fixings for each one. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes to the room

Fitted wardrobes in Wimbledon: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Wimbledon were built before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 99 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Wimbledon. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Merton is no exception. If your street in Wimbledon is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Close to Cannizaro Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mark's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Wimbledon

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Wimbledon?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Wimbledon is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns tricky space into storage.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It is common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the design visit.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so fitted wardrobes arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
