Walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon
About our walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon
Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, and we design the units to allow for it. People usually come to us about a calmer, clearer bedroom and a built-in dressing table; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. A home in Wimbledon might be either, or neither. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. Ceiling height sets how tall the furniture can go.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
- We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop.
- We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Before fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Before and after fitting day
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Know what you’ll keep before planning
- Make sure walls are dry before units go in
- Line up your electrician for any new lights
- Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.
Talk to your electrician early about lighting. New lights and wiring are for them, and the units can be designed around the lighting.
What it’s made from
Hanging rails
Long hanging is kept for coats and dresses, with double hanging elsewhere.
Shelves
Shoe shelves can be angled or flat planned around your shoes.
What affects the price in Wimbledon
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- How big the furniture is
- Parking near your home
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- How you want to use the space
- Your postcode and the borough
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Questions we are often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Wimbledon?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
I live near Wimbledon station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How much time does fitting need?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Bedrooms in Wimbledon: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Wimbledon were built before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The centre of Wimbledon is within about a quarter of a mile of the Wimbledon Hill Road Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wimbledon (about 44%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room, with storage scribed to walls that wander.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Wimbledon station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Wimbledon?
After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. Many people choose to fit it out as a dressing room.
People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:
- A side each for a couple
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
- Proper shoe storage
- Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mark's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Choosing a carpenter
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
