Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Coombe Hill
A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. People normally come to us about a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and a dressing area in part of a bedroom; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Coombe Hill, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and what you want to store. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
- We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work.
- You get a quote in writing for the design we have agreed, for you to read through.
- The units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.
How to prepare

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in Coombe Hill
Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so both have room.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A calmer, clearer bedroom
- Room for a growing wardrobe
- Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
- Turning a box room into a dressing room
If your home is one of the older houses near St John the Baptist, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- A written quote that sets out the job
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Coombe Hill
About 45% of the homes in the streets around Coombe Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Coombe Hill, Historic England’s list includes Dorich House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Galsworthy House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Coombe Hill is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For families living near Robin Hood Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Living in a block of flats near Norbiton station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Coombe Hill is about 2 miles south-west of Kingston upon Thames, within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Coombe Hill is part of that. Coombe Hill is one of 16 places on our list for Kingston upon Thames.
Here we cover the SW15 and KT2 postcode area for walk-in wardrobes. If you are just outside Coombe Hill, we also cover Kingston Vale (1 mile east), Putney Vale (1 mile east), Coombe (1 mile south), Norbiton (2 miles south-west) and Motspur Park (2 miles south-east). Across the rest of Kingston upon Thames, our area takes in Kingston upon Thames (2 miles south-west), Surbiton (3 miles south-west), New Malden (2 miles south), Hampton Wick (2 miles south-west), Chessington (5 miles south) and Seething Wells (3 miles south-west).
Local landmarks in Coombe Hill
We fit furniture in homes around Coombe Girls' School, Duke of Cambridge pub and Canbury School. For rail, the closest station is Norbiton station, roughly 1.6 miles south-west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Kingston Hospital (1.4 miles south-west) and White Lodge Museum (0.9 miles north). Not far away are Kingston Hill Road area and Fishpond Wood and Beverley Meads.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Marks are simple to touch in.
Shelves
Upper shelves are good for cases and seasonal clothes, while daily things stay within reach.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, and that has real appeal. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, in a finish that suits the house. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Questions from Coombe Hill
Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Coombe Hill?
Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Coombe Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Coombe Hill?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?
How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
