How we make walk-in wardrobes for Leaves Green

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that’s for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. If your home has separate space for two people’s clothes and a calmer, clearer bedroom, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around Leaves Green, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Is bespoke worth it?

Modular units are made in fixed sizes and rarely reach the ceiling. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, which can add a lot of storage. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Leaves Green

Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. We can design separate areas for hanging, shelves and drawers, so neither of you is squeezed.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror

The wider area includes historic houses like Down House, about 1.1 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Painted MDF doors look crisp and suit a calm, simple look.

Shelves

Upper shelves are good for cases and seasonal clothes, with everyday items lower down.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
