Walk-in wardrobes in New Southgate

A walk-in wardrobe needs air moving through it, particularly on an external wall, which can be colder than internal walls. Moving air helps keep clothes fresh and stops damp building up, and we design the units to allow for it. Most enquiries start with somewhere to sit and get ready and shelves for shoes and bags, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. Your home in New Southgate could be either, or something in between. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the units match the doors and skirting.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in New Southgate

Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. Many people choose to fit it out as a dressing room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A built-in dressing table
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

If you live near O. R. Tambo Recreation Ground, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bedrooms in New Southgate: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around New Southgate were built before 1919 (about 27%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of New Southgate, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Enfield is no exception. If your road in New Southgate falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

For a flat near New Southgate station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Near listed buildings like Arnos Grove Underground Station, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of New Southgate, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in New Southgate

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in New Southgate?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Does a conservation area in or near New Southgate affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. A line on how you’ll use the room helps.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
