Walk-in Wardrobes in Southgate

In Southgate, we design walk-in wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your walk-in wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Walk-in wardrobes in Southgate: what you get

Our walk-in wardrobes are made for homes in Southgate and all over London. We begin with a design visit, measuring the room and talking through the design, then a quote in writing. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and a built-in dressing table.

A good part of the housing around Southgate is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Southgate

I live near New Southgate station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Bedroom storage in Southgate

About 59% of the homes in the area around Southgate went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 28 entries within half a mile of the centre of Southgate. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Barnet is no exception. If your road in Southgate falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For families living near Ashmole Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Grovelands Park? Walk-in wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Why bespoke in Southgate?

There is a place for both. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For tricky rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Why us?

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Built around your room
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
