About our walk-in wardrobes in Arnos Grove
Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. Most enquiries start with more space for clothes and shoes and somewhere to sit and get ready, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Arnos Grove, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit walk-in wardrobes and other fitted storage well.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Fitted storage stays with the house when you move. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing fitted. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Arnos Grove affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Arnos Grove?
Yes, Arnos Grove is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?
Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, while any new walls are for your builder.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Is it better to have doors or open storage?
It is your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. Many people choose a mix.
Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?
Often, yes. It depends on the room’s shape and where the door and window sit. We plan it at the measuring visit.
Materials and finishes
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers keep smaller clothes and accessories tidy, and they can sit below the hanging or within a run of shelves.
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.
Walk-in wardrobes in Arnos Grove: local notes
In the streets around Arnos Grove, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Arnos Grove is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. The share of homes built before 1919 around Arnos Grove, about 46%, is well above the figure for Enfield as a whole, about 23%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of walk-in wardrobes.
If you live in a period home close to Syro-Malabar Catholic Church of London, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your children go to Bowes Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Arnos Grove?
The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- A dressing area in part of a bedroom
- Somewhere to sit and get ready
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
- Separate space for two people’s clothes
For a flat near New Southgate station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you choose who makes it

- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- First, you tell us about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
- At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
- We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Getting ready for fitting day

- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
