How we make walk-in wardrobes for Upper Edmonton
A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that’s for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. People typically come to us about moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Older bedrooms bring bowed walls and high ceilings, newer ones stud walls and lower ceilings. A home in Upper Edmonton might be either, or neither. We scribe, level and fix to suit whichever you have. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Upper Edmonton
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 29% of the housing in the area around Upper Edmonton, with about 26% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Upper Edmonton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Silver Street station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Percy House, about 0.6 miles south of the centre of Upper Edmonton, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What affects the price in Upper Edmonton
There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The overall size of the piece
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
What walk-in wardrobes cannot fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
- Curing damp in the walls
- Structural changes or removing walls
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Upper Edmonton
Does a conservation area in or near Upper Edmonton affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Upper Edmonton in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes. Upper Edmonton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Is ventilation important in a dressing room?
Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. We design the units to let air move, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Talk to your electrician early about lighting
- Measure how much long hanging you need
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Keep the room ventilated
Store heavy things on lower shelves, and don’t overload a single rail. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.
Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.
