Ashburton Wall Beds

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on wall beds in Ashburton starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

About our wall beds in Ashburton

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are hiding the bed when it’s not in use and more floor space in a studio flat.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Each wall is checked during the design visit before fixings are chosen. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about wall beds

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ashburton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Ashburton?

Yes. Ashburton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

Is a wall bed safe?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.

Will you provide a mattress for the bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We will explain its limits at the design visit, so you can pick the right one.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Wall beds in Ashburton: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Ashburton, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Ashburton, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Luke (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Woodside Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Croydon sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Ashburton, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

If you live near Ashburton Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 2.4 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For a family home near St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
