Wall beds for homes in Monks Orchard
A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you do not need it and comes down when it is time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, such as a spare room that is also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a studio that works by day and night and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Monks Orchard, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Your questions about wall beds in Monks Orchard
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Monks Orchard?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Monks Orchard?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Monks Orchard is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How much time does fitting need?
Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Is a wall bed safe?
Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
What we do not do
We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:
- Plastering or decorating the room
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Advice on your lease
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Birch plywood
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Spray-painted finish
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
Getting in touch
When you contact us, these help most:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, message us from the contact page.
What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Getting a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
