Wall beds in Chelsfield: local notes
About 59% of the homes in the streets around Chelsfield went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 22 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Chelsfield. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Bromley included. Vans bringing furniture to Chelsfield fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Chelsfield station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Martin of Tours, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

About our wall beds in Chelsfield
Our wall beds are made for homes in Chelsfield and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your home has a studio that works by day and night and a playroom that can sleep visitors, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage usually goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Chelsfield, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Why people ask for wall beds in Chelsfield
The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.
Here’s what wall beds can help with:
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- A bed that looks like cupboards by day
- A real mattress for visitors
- A home office that also sleeps guests
For a family home near Chelsfield Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Before you choose who makes it
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
Why bespoke in Chelsfield?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why choose us
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- A design visit, then a written quote
- Saturday work by arrangement
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
How fitting day works
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- First, you tell us about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
- We visit, measure and discuss the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
- You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop.
- The wall bed is fitted in your home.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know about parking near your home
Ask for a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

FAQs: wall beds in Chelsfield
Is Chelsfield in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes, Chelsfield is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chelsfield?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
How much space does a wall bed need?
That comes down to the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.
What happens during the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
What affects the price in Chelsfield
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Parking near your home
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Helping us understand the room
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Approximate measurements of the space
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
