About our wall beds in Maypole

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for a desk and a guest bed and a studio that works by day and night.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Maypole is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make wall beds for a home in Maypole?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Maypole is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Knockholt station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure and plan the layout around it.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Maypole

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around Maypole, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Maypole. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Maypole, let us know at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Maypole Cottages, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Chelsfield Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live near Hewitt's Chalk Bank, wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

What affects the cost of wall beds

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.
