Fitted cupboards in Crooked Billet, Merton

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in Crooked Billet starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

Fitted cupboards in Crooked Billet: what you get

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If you are living with storage in a corner nothing else fits and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, fitted cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. Fitted cupboards are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Leave room in front of the meters

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it is best done early.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim the edge of each cupboard to follow the wall, closing any gaps.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Crooked Billet

In the neighbourhood around Crooked Billet, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Crooked Billet include Southside House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of the Sacred Heart (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Merton sets its own rules. If your street in Crooked Billet is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Raynes Park station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near Cannizaro Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Crooked Billet

Is Crooked Billet in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, we work across Merton, Crooked Billet included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Crooked Billet?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What we do not do

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
