Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Wall beds in Mitcham

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, like a spare room that is also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. If your home has a studio that works by day and night and a home office that also sleeps guests, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Mitcham is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

FAQs: wall beds in Mitcham

Do you cover homes near Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Mitcham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Do you supply the mattress?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this during the design visit and plan the layout around it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

What wall beds can’t fix

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
  • Plastering or decorating the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and they can work in a simple space. They come in set sizes and finishes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Mitcham

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Mitcham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Mitcham is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Mitcham Eastfields station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Cranmer Green? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your children go to St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
