How we make wall beds for Muswell Hill

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way when the bed is down. Typical reasons to get in touch are a hobby room with a bed for guests and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around Muswell Hill are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Questions we are often asked

My house in Muswell Hill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Muswell Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Haringey and the rest of London, and Muswell Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you need wall beds in Muswell Hill?

Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

Near listed buildings like Odeon Cinema, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Muswell Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
