TV and Media Units in Muswell Hill

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Muswell Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • Nowhere good for speakers

TV and media units for homes in Muswell Hill

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in. If you’re living with nowhere good for speakers and leads that show from every angle, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Muswell Hill, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height TV and media units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Built-in living-room furniture in Muswell Hill

Homes built before 1919 make up about 62% of the housing in the area around Muswell Hill, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Muswell Hill, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the area around Muswell Hill, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Living in a block of flats near Alexandra Palace station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Athlone House, about 1.6 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

The problems TV and media units solve

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

Close to Alexandra Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

How to choose a carpenter in London

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets

Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads instead of making new ones. It keeps everything neat.

Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space because heat builds up between them. Give each its own space.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Cable routes
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You tell us about the room and what the unit needs to hold.
  2. We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Once you are happy, the unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable routes planned in.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place, with the cable routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and making time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Muswell Hill

Questions from Muswell Hill

My home in Muswell Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Muswell Hill?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind so the unit suits your next set. Tell us the size you might move to at the measuring visit.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
