Loft storage in Muswell Hill

How we make loft storage for Muswell Hill

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route along with the room itself, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s part of the job for any loft room in Muswell Hill. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are low eaves that nobody can use and needing storage in a loft office.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around Muswell Hill built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

In a loft room, walls and floors are seldom square. Standard furniture leaves visible gaps. Our storage is scribed to the room and set level, so the lines look right. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway. Let us know about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to fit.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Advice

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Muswell Hill homes and loft storage

Homes built before 1919 make up about 62% of the housing in the area around Muswell Hill, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Muswell Hill include Odeon Cinema (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Muswell Hill Public Library (Grade II), under half a mile south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the area around Muswell Hill, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Close to Alexandra Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Athlone House, about 1.6 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If your children go to Muswell Hill Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Do not pack things so tightly that air can’t move behind the knee wall. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us.

Your questions about loft storage in Muswell Hill

I live in a flat in Muswell Hill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Alexandra Palace station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Haringey and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
