About our wall beds in Tottenham Green
A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it is time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. Typical reasons to get in touch are a spare room that’s rarely slept in and shelves or a desk around the bed; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Tottenham Green date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
How it is made
Birch plywood
Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.
Bed mechanism housing
The bed sits inside a cabinet built around its mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
How fitting works for wall beds
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

Advice
Questions we are often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Tottenham Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
My home in Tottenham Green is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
What materials do you use?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. The materials are named in your written quote.
Do you fit furniture for landlords?
Yes. The process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, then the furniture is made and fitted. Access can be arranged through the letting agent.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Is a mattress included with the wall bed?
The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed by size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits at the design visit so you can choose one that works.

What affects the cost of wall beds
What you pay depends on:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The width and height of the space
- Doors and drawers, and how many
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
