Fitted furniture in N2

Our fitted wardrobes across N2

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. Most enquiries start with a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and too little room for clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

The nearest railway station is New Southgate station, roughly 2.2 miles north-east of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Finchley Memorial Hospital (1.1 miles north) and Jewish Museum - Finchley (0.7 miles north-west). Not far away are Long Lane Pasture.

Homes across N2 and their bedrooms

Across N2, including Hampstead, Finchley and East Finchley, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.

About 54% of the homes in N2 went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 54% of homes in the N2 postcode district were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. About 26% of households in N2 live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in N2 ahead of fitting day.

East Finchley: If you live in a flat close to New Southgate station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • A written quote that sets out the job

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It’s easy to touch up later, and it suits a softer, traditional look.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in N2

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That is why we measure the route, not just the room. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
