How we make wall beds for St Helier
Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day, ready for work, exercise or play. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a bed that fills a little-used room and a bed that looks like cupboards by day.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around St Helier, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it is a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Wall beds for homes in St Helier
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 69% of the housing in the streets around St Helier, with about 10% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of St Helier include Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Hill House (Grade II), under half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in St Helier joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The problems wall beds solve
Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.
People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:
- A bed that fills a little-used room
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
The wider area includes historic houses like Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.6 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
Why us?
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

Your questions about wall beds in St Helier
Do you cover homes near Sutton Common station?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is St Helier in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes. St Helier is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes, that is a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
How much does a wall bed cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each wall bed is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the room. To get started, message us from the contact page.
