Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Electrical work for reading lights
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

About our wall beds in Beddington

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bed that fills a little-used room and a bed that looks like cupboards by day.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Beddington, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Think about where extra bedding will go

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. A spray finish wipes clean and stays smooth and even.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Beddington affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Waddon station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits at the design visit, so you can pick the right one.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

What does a wall bed cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each wall bed is different, so we quote once we have seen the room. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and discuss the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
