About our wall beds in Temple Bar

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep and a storage wall with a bed inside.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Temple Bar built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Common questions about wall beds

Can you fit wall beds to the uneven walls of an older house in Temple Bar?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Does a conservation area in or near Temple Bar affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

What does a wall bed cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

What affects the price in Temple Bar

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising during the design visit.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Choosing a mattress for you
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, so it suits the doors on the bed cabinet.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish that suits older homes.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For a family home near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Close to Lincoln's Inn Fields? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
