Fitted wardrobes in WC2E: how it works

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and no space in front for doors to swing; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What goes into your quote

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

What’s near South Bank

In South Bank, that includes homes near St John's Church, London Nautical School and The BFI Reuben Library and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include Jubilee Gardens (a few minutes’ walk west), The Hole In The Wall pub (within half a mile east), St Andrew's and St John's Church of England Primary School (a few minutes’ walk east) and Oasis Academy Johanna (less than half a mile south-east). South Bank has its own railway station: London Waterloo station. A little further out are Baynard's Castle (0.9 miles north-east) and Royal Waterloo Hospital for Children and Women (less than half a mile north-east). For a walk, there’s Ludgate Hill and St. James's Park Lake.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across WC2E

Homes across WC2E, South Bank and Temple Bar among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Fitted wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.

The biggest shares of homes in the WC2E postcode district were built before 1919 (about 42%) and since 2000 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. About 42% of homes in the WC2E postcode district were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. A quarter or more of the homes in WC2E (about 27%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in WC2E ahead of fitting day.

South Bank: Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near Jubilee Gardens, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in WC2E

What you pay depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

When you need someone else

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes to the room

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes

Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust any door that starts to catch.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work isn’t as quick as buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Questions from WC2E

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. We measure the bed and the room at the design visit.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We talk through both during the design visit.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.
